Approach & process

UX-focus design: re-design of an existing product focusing on exploring current user experience and design improved interactions following the double diamond framework

Although not linear, these are the key steps of my process:

people riding boat on body of water

identifying issues with the current design, translate those into user needs and design opportunities

mapping best practices for UX/UI app design and brainstorm for improved functionalities

experimenting with evaluating user experience especially by setting up fictional, realistic race scenarios

Exploration

1.

Tasked with redesigning the Raceclocker app, our first steps involved consulting users and analysing the context at multiple levels — from micro-interactions to macro-environmental influences.

Ideation & wireframing

2.

We translated our research insights into ideas for improved app functionalities which we prototyped from low- to high-fidelity.

High-fidelity wireframes of two user flows: starting a race time and finishing it

Usability testing

3.

I designed and conducted scenario-based user tests to gather both feedback and quantitative metrics. By analysing the data, we evaluated the usability and performance of the new functionalities against the previous design.

Product delivery

Scenario-based usability testing (as described above)

users to keep an eye on the race and confidently time participants, improving timing accuracy and enhancing the overall user experience.

4.

Evaluation:

The final proposal for the new Raceclocker features the voice memo technology. The user logs times tapping anywhere on the screen whilst speaking out loud near the phone. This innovative concept allows

Result:

Reflection & learnings

  • master the double diamond framework (first time using this approach)

  • design interactive prototypes with Figma, Adobe XD and ProtoPie

  • lead the design, planning, execution and analysis of user tests

  • successfully conduct a 6-months project group project remotely (COVID-19 pandemia)

Raceclocker was my very first design project, through which I discovered the double diamond approach. It also demanded us to deliver high-quality reports on our process and design decisions. The latter was the most challenging for me.
